Garbage Bag Sizing Guide: Selecting the Right Bin Liner

Efficient waste management starts with choosing the right garbage bag. If the bag exceeds the size required for the trash bin, it will fall with each heavy object. If the liner is too thin, sharp objects may puncture it.

Avoid tears, leaks, and spills by selecting the right trash bag that fits your needs, including its size and thickness. Find the right bag for your bin with our guide and charts below.

Finding the Right-Sized Trash Bag

By the Garbage Bag's Size

The size of a trash bag can vary from small to extra large, referring to the volume and waste capacity of the bag. The manufacturer of your garbage bin will typically indicate its waste disposal capacity in gallons or litres. Make sure the bag's capacity is equal to or larger than that of the bin.

Size Capacity Uses

Small

10 - 20 L (2.6 - 5.3 gal.)

Small bathroom wastebaskets, desk bins, and bedroom trash cans

Medium

21 - 40 L (5.5 - 10.5 gal.)

Kitchen bins, small outdoor bins, and laundry room trash cans

Large

41 - 75 L (10.8 - 19.8 gal.)

Larger kitchen bins, breakroom or cafeteria receptacles, and yard waste

Extra Large

76 - 120+ L (20 - 32+ gal.)

Garage waste bins, construction or renovation receptacles, and industrial cleanup

By the Trash Bin's Dimensions

If you don't already know your bin's size or capacity, the section below will help you measure and calculate it. Helping you find the perfect liner for your trash can.

Finding the Right-Sized Trash Bag

Determining the Width

The width of the garbage bag should be half the outer circumference or perimeter of the container.

For a circular container, the circumference is calculated by multiplying the diameter by pi (approximately 3.14). You can also find the circumference by taking a string around the bin's edge. For a square or rectangular container, the perimeter is the sum of all four sides.

Determining the Length

The length of the garbage bag should be the height of the bin (without the lid) plus half of the diameter of the container. Also, you should add 3-4 inches for overhang.

Selecting the Right Thickness

You can measure the thickness of a trash bag in either microns or mils, with 1 micron being significantly smaller than 1 mil. The bag thickness should be in microns or between 0.003 and 0.49 mils for light-duty trash, 0.50-1.2 mils for medium-duty trash, and over 1.3 mils for heavy‑duty trash.

The manufacturing process determines the density of the liner. High-density bags are light, thin, and measured in microns. Low-density liners are strong and resistant, measured in mils.

A thicker, puncture-resistant bag will have a higher mil count and be of low density. On the other hand, a thin, cost-effective liner will have a lower micron count and be of high density.

Consider the type of waste being disposed of when reviewing your garbage bag options. For everyday household or office waste, a bag with a lower mil count should suffice. For industrial or outdoor waste, a bag with a higher mil count is ideal.
