The Tenaquip Way

Tenaquip has always strived to differentiate itself from other companies. We believe that these 29 carefully crafted fundamentals perfectly encapsulate the essence of our unique culture. These fundamentals act as a roadmap, guiding all members of the Tenaquip family towards the goal of exceeding our customers’ expectations. They provide insight into the standard we set – a standard built on strengthening customer relationships, fostering a positive and engaging work environment, and empowering both employees and partners to achieve the best results. We call it, the Tenaquip Way.

1. FOCUS ON THE CUSTOMER.

Do what’s best for the customer, even if it’s harder for us in the short run. Put their needs ahead of our own and remember that there’s no greater way to build a reputation than to steadfastly do what’s right for others. Learn to think from others’ perspectives and find a way to help them meet their needs while also fulfilling our own.

2. GET STUFF DONE.

Take personal responsibility for making things happen. Respond to every situation by looking for how we can do it, rather than explaining why it can’t be done. Don’t make excuses or wait for others to solve the problem. See issues through to their completion.

3. THINK SAFE. WORK SAFE.

Know and practice the safety procedures for your job. Watch out for the safety of your teammates as well, because we’re all part of the Tenaquip family. Never take shortcuts that compromise your safety or that of your teammates.

4. BE PROACTIVE.

Solve problems before they happen by anticipating future issues, planning for contingencies, and addressing them in advance. Work with appropriate lead times. Preventing issues is always better than fixing them.

5. DELIVER BASIC SERVICE BRILLIANCE.

With every experience, do the little things, as well as the big things, that surprise people. Make every interaction stand out for its helpfulness. Create the “WOW” factor that turns customers into our biggest fans. This includes both internal and external customers.

6. GET CLEAR ON EXPECTATIONS.

Be clear and avoid misunderstandings by discussing expectations upfront. Set expectations for others and ask when you’re not clear on what they expect of you. Be honest about what you can’t do. End all meetings with clarity about action items, responsibilities, and due dates.

7. COMPLETE A DAY’S WORK IN A DAY.

Have a passion for what we do and be fully engaged. Make the most of each day by approaching every task with energy, focus, purpose, and enthusiasm. Work with a sense of urgency to get things done.

8. BE CURIOUS.

In the search for the best solutions, challenge and question what you don’t understand. Don’t accept anything at “face value” if it doesn’t make sense to you. Be curious, ask thoughtful questions, and listen intently to the answers. Dig deeper to go beyond the expected. Ask the extra question.

9. BE A FANATIC ABOUT RESPONSE TIME.

People expect us to respond to their questions and concerns quickly, whether it’s in person, on the phone, or by e-mail. This includes simply acknowledging that we got the question and “we’re on it,” as well as keeping those involved continuously updated on the status of outstanding issues. Rapid response is one of the easiest and best ways to stand out from the crowd.

10. COMMUNICATE TO BE UNDERSTOOD.

Know your audience. Write and speak in a way that they can understand. Use the simplest possible explanations.

11. ACT WITH INTEGRITY.

Always do right – you’ll sleep better. Demonstrate an unwavering commitment to doing the right thing in every action you take and in every decision you make, especially when no one’s looking. Always tell the truth, no matter the consequences.

12. WORK ON YOURSELF.

Be a lifelong learner. Seek out and take advantage of every opportunity to gain more knowledge, increase your skills, and become more of an expert. Be resourceful about learning and sharing best practices with your teammates.

13. MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

Be an active part of your community. Giving back is a Tenaquip tradition. Consider how you can contribute to improving your community. Every effort matters. You can and do make a difference.

14. CREATE A TONE OF FRIENDLINESS AND WARMTH.

Every conversation, phone call, e-mail, letter, and even voicemail, sets a tone and creates a feeling. Pay attention to every interaction and be sure you’re setting a tone of friendliness, warmth, and helpfulness.

15. EMBRACE CHANGE AND GROWTH.

What got us here is not the same as what will get us to the next level. Get outside your comfort zone, rather than hanging on to old ways of doing things. Be excited by the possibilities that change and growth bring. Be flexible and open to new ideas and approaches.

16. HONOR COMMITMENTS.

Do what you say you’re going to do when you say you’re going to do it. This includes being on time for all phone calls, appointments, meetings, and promises. If a commitment can’t be fulfilled, notify others early and agree on a new deliverable to be honored.

17. BE RELENTLESS ABOUT IMPROVEMENT.

You will never find the best way to do things but keep working on getting as close as possible. Regularly evaluate the way you work to find ways to improve. Look for the opportunity to learn and grow with every project/assignment.

18. CELEBRATE SUCCESS.

Recognizing people doing things right is more effective than pointing out when they do things wrong. Regularly extend meaningful acknowledgment and appreciation — in all directions throughout our organization.

19. LEAD BY EXAMPLE.

The best way to influence others at any level is through your own example. Walk the talk. Take responsibility, both formally and informally, to coach, guide, teach, and mentor others. Be the change you want to see.

20. PRACTICE BLAMELESS PROBLEM‑SOLVING.

Demonstrate a relentless solution focus, rather than pointing fingers or dwelling on problems. Identify lessons learned and use those lessons to improve ourselves and our processes so we don’t make the same mistake twice. Get smarter with every mistake. Learn from every experience.

21. DELIVER RESULTS.

Work hard, it can be your secret weapon. While effort is important, we reward and recognize results. Follow up on everything and take responsibility to ensure that tasks get completed. Set high goals, use measurements to track your progress, and hold yourself accountable for achieving those results.

22. BE POSITIVE.

You have the power to choose your attitude. Choose to be upbeat, optimistic, and enthusiastic. Give people the benefit of the doubt. Your attitude is contagious. Perpetual optimism is a force multiplier.

23. LISTEN GENEROUSLY.

Listening is more than simply “not speaking.” Give others your undivided attention. Be present and engaged. Minimize the distractions and let go of the need to agree or disagree. Suspend your judgment and be curious to know more, rather than jumping to conclusions. Above all, listen to understand.

24. SPEAK COURAGEOUSLY.

Speak honestly, professionally, and respectfully in a way that helps to make progress. Say what you mean, and be willing to ask questions, share ideas, or raise issues that may be uncomfortable when it’s necessary for team success. Address issues directly with those who are involved or affected. Once a decision is made, get fully aligned by putting your complete support behind it.

25. FIX PROBLEMS AT THE SOURCE.

Address issues by discovering the root cause rather than simply tackling the symptoms. It’s better to invest time in developing a long-term solution rather than simply applying a “Band-Aid.”

26. HAVE EACH OTHER'S BACKS.

Be there for each other and be willing to step into another role or help a co-worker when that’s what’s required for success. Don’t let your ego or personal agenda get in the way of doing what’s best for the team. Help each other succeed.

27. INVEST IN RELATIONSHIPS.

Get to know your clients and co-workers on a more personal level. Talk more and e-mail less. Understand what makes others tick and what’s important to them. Strong relationships enable us to work through difficult issues and challenging times more successfully.

28. PAY ATTENTION TO THE DETAILS.

Be obsessive about accuracy and precision. From unit of measure to the required date, ship-to address, color, or size… details matter. Double-check your work. The goal is to get things right, not simply to get them done.

29. KEEP THINGS FUN.

While our passion for excellence is real, remember that the world has bigger problems than the daily challenges that make up our work. Keep perspective. Don’t take things personally or take yourself too seriously. Laugh every day. Stop when it’s no longer fun.
