During the summertime, many areas in Canada experience a number of extreme heat events, often referred to as heat waves. Such conditions can lead to reduced productivity, longer downtimes and, in some cases, illness.

1. BEFORE

Pay attention to local weather forecasts and alerts so you know when to expect higher temperatures
Ensure that your facilities are properly ventilated and can provide active hydration
Make certain your air ducts are clean and replace any old air filters
Educate staff on how to spot the symptoms of heat related illness and how to treat

Minimize sun exposure by using sunscreen and make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions
Stay hydrated and drink plenty of cool liquids
Schedule extra work breaks in shaded areas or areas where it is air conditioned
Dress for the weather and wear loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing
Use sunglasses that can provide protection against UVA and UVB rays

Watch out for symptoms of heat illness which include dizziness, fainting, headaches, extreme thirst among others
Use specialized cooling equipment to help workers recover faster
If you have any plants and/or grass on your property, take the time to water them
Replenish any supplies that have been used during the heat wave
